Poodle: a coat that never stops growing and a mind that never stops thinking

It’s in fashion, and not by chance: it’s very clever, affectionate and hardly sheds. But that coat needs looking after. What a Poodle needs to feel good.

Caniche: pelo que no para de crecer y una cabeza que no para de pensar

The Poodle comes in four sizes: toy, miniature, medium and standard. In homes you mostly see the toy and the miniature, which fit on the sofa and in a bag. Whatever the size, the character and care are very similar.

The coat comes first

The Poodle barely sheds, which is why it appeals to people who don’t want a sofa full of hair. In return, its coat grows non-stop and tangles easily, especially behind the ears, in the armpits and on the chest.

  • Brush it several times a week right down to the skin, not just on top. A slicker brush and a metal comb are good allies.
  • Plan on a trip to the groomer every few weeks. How often depends on how long you keep it.
  • If knots form, don’t cut them blindly with scissors: it’s easy to cut the skin.

Ears and eyes

Its ears hang down and have hair inside, so they get little air. Check them every week. If they smell bad, look red or it scratches a lot, see the vet. In light-coloured dogs it’s common for the area under the eyes to stain. Clean it gently with a damp gauze.

Teeth

In small Poodles, tartar builds up early. Get it used to you touching its mouth and brushing its teeth from puppyhood. Chews help, but they don’t replace brushing.

A mind that needs work

It’s one of the most intelligent breeds, and a bored Poodle invents its own jobs, usually with your things. Sniffing toys, treat dispensers and learning tricks tire it out as much as a long walk.

If you notice anything odd about its skin, its eyes or the way it moves, ask your vet. These are general tips for day-to-day life.
