Beaches, mountains and terraces: where you can go with your dog
More and more places accept dogs, but the rules change from one place to another. How to find out and how to behave so we keep being let in.
Beaches
Most beaches do not allow dogs during the bathing season, but many municipalities have beaches or areas for dogs. Dates and times are decided by each council: check before you go and follow the signs.
- Bring fresh water and shade: salt water is not for drinking.
- Rinse it with fresh water when you finish.
- Watch out for hot sand and the sunniest hours.
Mountains and natural areas
In nature parks and protected areas, dogs usually have to be kept on a lead, because of wildlife and livestock. Ley 7/2023 (the Animal Welfare Act) bans letting them off the lead where they could cause harm, especially in national parks and protected areas (art. 25.d).
Bars, shops and transport
Each business decides whether it admits animals, except assistance dogs, which have the right to enter. Look for the sticker or ask before going in.
So they keep letting us in
Lead when needed, poo always picked up and respect for people who do not want dogs nearby. Every well-behaved dog opens the door for the others.
