If a dog bites you: first steps

What to do with the wound, what details to ask for and how to claim for the damage if needed.

The wound

  • Wash it well with soap and water for several minutes.
  • Go to the health centre or A&E, even if it looks minor: bites get infected easily and they will tell you whether you need a vaccination or treatment.
  • If the wound is serious or bleeding a lot, call 112.

The details

  • Name and phone number of the person who had the dog and, if possible, the microchip number and the insurer.
  • Witnesses' details, photos of the wound and of the place.
  • If they will not give them to you or the dog was on its own, tell the local police.

Claiming

The dog's owner is liable for the damage (Código Civil, the Civil Code, art. 1905), and if they have insurance, the insurer usually covers it. Keep the medical reports and the expenses. For a serious case, talk to a lawyer.

The health centre or the police will tell you whether the dog has to go through veterinary observation. It is important to rule out rabies.
