If your pet goes missing: what to do in the first few hours
You have 48 hours to report it, but it is best to act straight away. A step-by-step plan, and what you can get ready today so it comes home sooner.
As soon as you notice
- Search the area where it went missing and call it calmly. Many hide nearby, especially cats.
- Tell the local police and the council's animal collection service. The law requires you to report the loss within 48 hours at most (Ley 7/2023, the Animal Welfare Act, art. 24.2.g).
- Call the animal shelters and vet clinics in the area.
- If it has a microchip, check in your region's register that the details are correct and mark it as lost if you can.
- Put up posters with a photo and phone number and share it in your local neighbourhood groups.
Get it ready today
- A registered microchip with your current phone number. If you change number or address, update it.
- A tag on the collar with a phone number. With the Petuki QR tag, whoever finds it sees its name and, if you want, your phone number. You can mark it as «lost» from your account.
- A few recent, sharp photos, of its whole body and of its face.
If you find a lost animal
Any vet or the local police can read its microchip. If you cannot keep it, tell the council service: town councils must have a collection service available 24 hours a day (Ley 7/2023).
