Your cat has discovered the radiator: how to keep them cosy this autumn

When it turns chilly, cats seek out the warmest spot in the house (which is usually your laptop). Ideas to give them their own warm, safe retreat.

Tu gato ha descubierto el radiador: cómo ponérselo calentito en otoño

If anyone's an expert at finding the warmest spot in the house, it's your cat. As the cold sets in, they turn up on top of the radiator, inside the wardrobe, on your computer keyboard or glued to you on the sofa. Cats adore warmth, and keeping them comfy is easy.

A bed for the season

In autumn and winter, many open beds just don't cut it. Cats tend to prefer retreats that wrap around them.

  • Cave or igloo beds, where they feel protected and hold on to their warmth.
  • High-sided beds for curling up into a doughnut.
  • Soft blankets they can knead and that are easy to wash.
  • Radiator beds, designed specifically for the job and securely attached.

Location is everything

Put their bed somewhere free of draughts, slightly raised if the floor is cold and, if possible, where it catches a bit of sun during the day. Cats follow the sun around the house over the course of the day; a bed by the window can become their favourite spot.

Several beds spread around the house give them options to choose from depending on the time and the temperature.

Safety around heat sources

Cats love heaters and fireplaces, but it pays to take precautions.

  • Put a guard in front of fireplaces and stoves.
  • Don't let them sleep pressed against very hot radiators or electric heaters.
  • Only use heated accessories designed for pets, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Before starting the car in winter, if there are cats about, give the bonnet a few taps: some like to shelter in the engine.

Older cats and hairless cats

Older cats, very slim cats and breeds with little fur tend to feel the cold more. Give them extra-soft beds, well placed and easy to reach without much jumping.

If you notice your older cat finding it harder to move about or jump as the cold sets in, mention it to your vet at the next visit.

And don't worry if they sleep for hours on end: that's what cats do, in autumn and always.

At Petuki you'll find cave beds, cushions and radiator beds so your cat can spend autumn in cosy cinnamon-bun mode.
